New wastewater treatment equipment using UV radiation and a photocatalyst was developed and its functions were evaluated. A titanium dioxide used as a photocatalyst was fixed on a quartz glass pipe by the sol-gel method. When the glass pipe was put in the water, active oxygen was formed on the titanium dioxide film by UV radiation, and the oxygen degradaed any organic substance in the water. The sol for the fixed film formation consisted of titanium-tetra-n-butoxide, ethanol and water. The sol was coated on the glass pipe, and burned at 500℃ to construct a clear anataze type titanium dioxide film, which was effective for treatment of wastewater. A 1kW high pressure mercury lamp was put in the center of the reactor of 5.5L capacity. The mercury lamp was wrapped with the quartz pipe, and air was sent from the bottom of the reactor. The reactor and stock tank of 20L capacity were combined with pumps and pipes. The equipment system was controlled with a touch panel display . When the wastewater containing malonic acid was treated by the present equipment in a batch method, total organic carbon(TOC) was decreased from 170mgC/L to less than 10Cmg/L in 3hours.
